Oracle Clinical User Group Meeting Includes Westat Presentation on Streamlining Electronic Data Capture

Westat staff gave a presentation at the recent Oracle Clinical User Group (OCUG) meeting in New Orleans on October 4-7. The OCUG is an international group of users of Oracle Clinical software and related applications. The purpose of OCUG is to facilitate the exchange of information and experience among users of the system. The group also supports and guides the Oracle Corporation with respect to further development of products within the Health Sciences (OHS) applications suite.

The presentation, Streamlining System Development Life Cycle (SDLC) in Electronic Data Capture (EDC), was presented by Grace Kao and co-authored by Amy Biggi. Streamlining the SDLC process in EDC plays an important role in reducing the study startup time. This presentation focused on the following issues:

  • Availability of data entry screen to site users upon enrolling the first patient, and
  • Activation of edit checks at data entry to allow site users to view and resolve data issues right away.

A contract research organization faces additional challenges in meeting the needs of sponsors who may specify different disease targets, which prevents standardization in study design. A case study was also presented using a network of consortia, each containing multiple protocols with various disease targets. The test case was used to demonstrate how overall efficiencies in SDLC can be improved through optimal study design.

Westat Offers Interactive Web Response (IWR) System

Westat has been providing interactive voice response (IVR) solutions since 1995 using our proprietary system, WesTrax®. We are now pleased to announce the addition of an interactive web response (IWR) system as an additional clinical trial management solution.

One of the many benefits of using a web-based system is its enhanced, more efficient user experience. The IWR system is extremely easy for the user to access. One user identification number is used to access both the WesTrax IVR and the IWR systems, which eliminates multiple access identifications. Here are a number of other benefits:

  • Quick, efficient system functions — use pre-populated fields
  • Simplified data management — enter data from multiple links, pages, and button clicks
  • Helpful practice center — toggle between production and practice center by selecting the appropriate link
  • Accessible through Internet — no need to download other applications or software
  • Improved quality — use system parameters, which prevent invalid entries from being processed
  • Clinical supply cost savings — designed on the study's supply strategy
  • Reduced client-required resources — integrates activities as multiple system functions can be accessed from a single page
  • Security — provides secure system access with user identification numbers and password restrictions

The WesTrax IWR system offers the identical key functions of clinical trial management as the IVR system. System options are selected and designed based on the client's needs. Westat has a standard system available, which reduces the cost and time for implementation. We can also provide a complete customized solution to meet client's study needs.
