Biospecimen and Environmental Sample Tracking (BEST) System
BEST Standardization and Harmonization
The research community is increasingly focused on standardizing and harmonizing all supporting technical and operational practices.
These practices include collecting and disseminating samples and data. Westat has responded to this need by designing and producing the
Biospecimen and Environmental Sample Tracking (BEST) system.
BEST Performance
BEST documents and tracks the inventory and movement of biologic specimens and environmental samples throughout their life cycles.
This web application, developed using .NET® and SQL Server® technology, addresses substantial commonalities
across studies.
The system has important performance characteristics:
- Can be easily configured to meet a study’s individual needs,
- Can expand its capabilities where specialization is required, and
- Eliminates costly custom design and implementation for the client.
BEST Capabilities
BEST is designed to accommodate all kinds of studies: small or large, simple or complex. It is consists of a powerful array of
capabilities that produce a comprehensive and efficient means to track study samples:
- Develops and maintains an accurate inventory of samples collected or associated with an analysis, from collection initiation
through work completion.
- Records all required protocol information (patient status, collection time, sample condition, sample location).
- Ensures information is transmitted with the sample ID to the laboratory/biorepository.
- Ensures collected and shipped samples reach their intended destination.
- Tracks sample processing history (aliquots, movements, tests, thaws) to maintain links between parent samples and subsequent
splits or aliquots.
- Links environmental samples with biospecimens as necessary.
- Queries an inventory to identify samples meeting protocol requirements for a specified analysis.
- Requisitions samples from an inventory.
- Tracks samples’ movements through all specified activities.
- Tracks receipts of results and maintains reference to result information.
- Provides reports on individual or aggregate sample status and condition.
- Provides rapid access to data about samples.
