National Health and Nutrition Examination Surveys (NHANES)
Since 1982, Westat has conducted three National Health and Nutrition Examination Surveys (NHANES) for the National Center for Health Statistics (NCHS): Hispanic HANES (1982-84), NHANES III (1988-94), and the current continuous NHANES (started in 1999). NHANES includes interviews with respondents in their homes followed by extensive physical examinations performed in mobile examination centers. A traveling team of physicians, dentists, technicians, nutritionists, and interviewers collect data from approximately 5,000 persons nationwide each year. To date, Westat has examined more than 50,000 participants.
NHLBI Growth and Health Study
Westat is one of three clinical sites participating in the NHLBI Growth and Health Study, a 10-year longitudinal investigation to follow a cohort of black and white girls and their parents. Participants undergo detailed physical, psychosocial, and nutritional evaluations to provide information about the determinants of obesity and risk factors for cardiovascular disease.
