Data Collection Field Staff

Westat employs field staff in different locations across the country, depending on the requirements of our research projects. Field staff are hired on a temporary, as-needed basis and are generally not eligible for fringe benefits.

Positions may include the following:

Field Interviewers: Field interviewers conduct in-person interviews with selected respondents. These interviews will be conducted using computer-assisted or paper questionnaires, depending on study requirements. Field interviewers are responsible for contacting respondents at homes, businesses, or schools to conduct the interviews. They transmit the interview data back to the home office.

Listers: Listers record residential addresses in selected areas across the country. Listing is typically conducted by field interviewers.

Assessors: Assessors administer standardized tests, most frequently to children in schools, though other settings and respondents may be included.

Medical Records Abstractors: Abstractors review medical records and record information from the files as specified by the study protocol. Medical abstractors usually conduct their work at hospitals and doctors' offices.

Other Data Collectors: These positions range from performing clerical work, to observing behavior (e.g., observing seat belt use), to health professionals conducting medical examinations.

Field Interviewers

new Interviewers (Job Code WW/CMS/8906) A long-term project for the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services seeks organized, detail-oriented individuals to interview Medicare recipients for a health care study.

Successful applicants will be trained to use a laptop computer to collect health and insurance information from selected Medicare beneficiaries. Interviewers go into the homes of older and disabled individuals and record the cost of every medical visit the sampled person made during the study period. We are hiring in approximately 45 cities and towns throughout the U.S.

We need applicants who are friendly, flexible, and willing to commit to 2 years of household interviewing. Candidates must have a car and valid driver’s license and are expected to be available to work at least 25 daytime hours a week. Successful applicants must attend two mandatory paid out-of-town training sessions (July 26 – August 3 and September 14 – 21). A personal background check may be required. Work begins in early August 2008. Mileage is reimbursed at the current government per mile rate. This is a part-time nonexempt position with limited benefits. Pay rates are based on experience.

new Interviewer (Job Code: WW/OWS/8931) We are currently seeking motivated individuals with a commitment to excellence to conduct household interviews for an important environmental study sponsored by the state of Oklahoma. Interviewers will use CAPI (computer assisted in-person interview) to conduct the interviews. Applicants must be available to work 20-30 hours a week including day, evening, and weekend hours, and have a valid driver's license and the use of an insured vehicle. In addition, applicants must reside in Oklahoma City or the surrounding areas and be able to attend a mandatory training June 9-12, 2008, in Oklahoma City. Qualifications include basic computer skills and the ability to keep respondents interested and engaged. Previous interviewer, lister, and CAPI experience is preferred. new Interviewers (Job Code WW/NSY/8905) We are currently seeking motivated individuals with a commitment to excellence to collect interview data for an important nonhousehold study conducted for the U.S. Department of Justice, Bureau of Justice Statistics. Data will be collected in Boston, MA; Albany, NY; Washington, DC; Jacksonville, FL; Orlando, FL; Dallas, TX; Houston, TX; Denver, CO; Los Angeles, CA; San Francisco, CA; and Portland, OR. Interviewers will travel to correctional facilities and will use ACASI (audio computer-assisted self-interviewing) to administer the survey to selected youth. Candidates must be available to work 25-30 hours per week (generally during the hours of 7:30 a.m. to 3 p.m.); have a reliable and insured car and a valid driver's license; be willing to travel up to 1 week at a time for some sites; and be able to lift 35 pounds. Previous experience with CAPI/ACASI preferred (and/or interview experience). Must undergo a criminal background check. Work will begin for Wave 1-June 3-4, 2008 and for Wave 2-July 10, 2008. Assessors/Interviewers (Job Code: WW/FF9/8927) The Year 9 Survey of Parents study, being conducted for Princeton University, is currently seeking motivated English and bilingual English/Spanish speaking data collectors. Data collection includes interviews with parents and one-on-one assessments of 9-year-old children during home visits. Candidates must be available to work a minimum of 20 (maximum 40) hours per week, including evenings, weekends, and some weekdays as needed. Qualifications include having effective communication, persuasive, and organizational skills; attention to detail; and laptop keyboarding skills. Fieldworkers with experience on such studies as ECLS-B and ECLS-K are encouraged to apply.

Assessment Administrators will travel to schools and use a script to conduct assessments with a sample of students in grades 4, 8, and 12. Medical Records Abstractors

Medical Record Abstractors (Job Code WW/DWN/8901) Westat is seeking individuals to gather and report data for a long-term national public health surveillance system that monitors trends in drug-related emergency department visits. Prior experience with medical records and/or medical terminology is required. Familiarity with computers including using multiple computer applications is necessary. We are looking for individuals who are dependable, detail-oriented, respectful of confidential information, and comfortable in a hospital environment. Reporters receive in-person training and support from Westat staff in the field as well as at the home office.
