Westat employs staff members in the Rockville, Maryland, area to perform administrative, data collection, and data processing duties on current Westat research projects. Some assignments require personnel who are bilingual, with English being one of the languages spoken. Survey processing staff positions are paid on an hourly basis. Benefits are based on hours worked and tenure. A high school degree or its equivalent is required. new Call Center Agents (Job Code: WW/SP/8809) Westat is seeking qualified call center agents to support the recruitment for a national education study. Responsibilities will include answering our recruitment telephone line to prescreen interested candidates and conduct employment and reference checks. In addition, you will be required to read a series of questions and record the candidate's answers into a software application. Training will be provided. Call center agents must have specific qualifications that include excellent verbal communication skills and a clear speaking voice; demonstrated experience with telephone and/or customer service; good data entry aptitude along with basic PC skills in a Windows environment; and the ability to maintain a professional demeanor. These are hourly positions. Candidates must be able to work day hours (M-F). Some late afternoon shifts available. A high school degree or its equivalent is required.

Medical Record Abstractors (Job Code: WW/SP/8804) Westat has openings for candidates to abstract data from medical records in a computerized database for a long-term health study for our Dawn Project (Drug Abuse Warning Network) in Rockville, Maryland. Applicants must have experience in one or more of the following: transcription and/or coding, medical terminology, health insurance, medical billing practices, and medical research. Ideal candidates will possess the ability to handle confidential documents and effectively work individually or in a team environment. These are full day time hourly positions (35-40hrs/week M-F).

Survey Processing Support Staff (Job Code WW/SP/8802) The Survey Processing staff of Westat is looking for candidates with both basic office skills (including use of a PC) and a good command of the English language. We are also in need of individuals with specific skills that include demonstrated experience in one or more of the following areas: data entry and review; knowledge of Excel and/or Access or similar software applications; customer service via phone support; and familiarity with medical terminology. These are hourly positions and some are entry level with a minimum starting rate of $10.50 an hour. Typical assignments may include the following:

  • Receipt Control Staff: Receipt control staff receive completed surveys and other documents and assign tracking numbers and status codes so that each case can be properly tracked and located if it is necessary to review the original document at a later date.
  • Data Coders: Data coders follow Westat and study-specific conventions to assign numerical values to all items on a survey in preparation for data entry and future qualitative and statistical analysis.
  • Data Entry Staff: Data entry staff work with typical office software packages or more advanced or proprietary databases or programs. The speed and/or accuracy requirements for a given data entry assignment will vary.
  • Data Editors: Data editors review data against logical statements to find any inconsistencies following data entry. Data editors are also responsible for documenting and recommending updates to any errors found within the data set.
  • Medical Records Abstractors: Medical records abstractors review medical records and record certain information available in those files. This position usually requires a medical background and/or demonstrable familiarity with medical terminology.
  • Telephone Interviewers/Recruiters: Telephone interviewers/recruiters contact potential survey respondents to gain participation in a study or participating survey respondents to administer the survey at that time. The ability to read a script accurately and according to study protocol is vital.
  • Helpdesk Specialists: Helpdesk specialists provide a range of support roles to studies. Some helpdesk positions require technical skills to provide support to field interviewers who are using laptop computers. Other helpdesk personnel will receive calls from survey respondents in need of assistance while filling out a survey.
