Field Data Collection Job Types

Westat employs field staff in different locations across the country, depending on the requirements of our research projects. Field staff are hired on a temporary, as-needed basis and are generally not eligible for fringe benefits.

Positions may include the following:

Field Interviewers: Field interviewers conduct in-person interviews with selected respondents. These interviews will be conducted using computer-assisted or paper questionnaires, depending on study requirements. Field interviewers are responsible for contacting respondents at homes, businesses, or schools to conduct the interviews. They transmit the interview data back to the home office.

Listers: Listers record residential addresses in selected areas across the country. Listing is typically conducted by field interviewers.

Assessors: Assessors administer standardized tests, most frequently to children in schools, though other settings and respondents may be included.

Medical Records Abstractors: Abstractors review medical records and record information from the files as specified by the study protocol. Medical abstractors usually conduct their work at hospitals and doctors' offices.

Other Data Collectors: These positions range from performing clerical work, to observing behavior (e.g., observing seat belt use), to health professionals conducting medical examinations.

Field Interviewers

Interviewers (Job Code: WW/PPT/10011) We are currently seeking motivated individuals with a commitment to excellence to collect data for an important household literacy study being conducted for the U.S. Department of Education in the states listed below. We are seeking detail-oriented individuals who will screen households to identify respondents, gain respondent cooperation, set appointments, and administer an interview and assessment using a Westat-provided laptop computer.

Candidates:

  • Must be able to read, write, and communicate effectively in English. If hired to be a bilingual interviewer, must be fluent in both written and spoken English and Spanish.
  • Must work flexible hours, primarily evenings and weekends.
  • Must be willing to work up to 25 hours per week, when work is available. Work hours are based on assignment, location, and respondents' needs.
  • Must be able to lift and carry up to 20 pounds, which includes a laptop and interviewing materials, and can climb stairs if needed with or without reasonable accommodations to gain entry to sampled households.
  • Must have an analog landline telephone at home (or be willing to obtain one); answering machine/voice mail preferred.
  • Must own or have unlimited use of an insured car and have a valid U.S. driver's license.
  • Must be available to attend an out-of-town paid training for 5 days beginning in late August.
  • Must have keyboarding skills.
  • Previous interviewing or public contact experience preferred.
  • High school diploma or equivalent required.
  • Must be able to pass Federally mandated background check.
  • Must live in or within driving distance of one of the areas listed below:

This is a part-time, nonexempt position with no benefits. It is required that you complete a background check during the hiring process. Work will begin in late August and continue through the end of November. Pay rate is based on area of residency and relevant experience.

Assessors

new Assessors (Job Code WW/ECL/10015) The Early Childhood Longitudinal Study�Kindergarten Class of 2010-2011 (ECLS-K: 2011) is an important study providing comprehensive data about children's early learning and development, transition into kindergarten and progress through elementary school. We are seeking detail-oriented individuals to conduct in-person child assessments at schools and to telephone parents for interviews using a Westat-provided laptop computer. Assessors will also followup on the collection of consent forms, report regularly to a Team Leader, communicate with project and school staff via email, complete and submit administrative paperwork, and transmit child assessment and parent interview data regularly.

Candidates MUST:

  • Be able to work up to 30-40 hours per week, when work is available from August through December, 2010, and March through June, 2011;
  • Be able to attend an out-of-town training from August 13-22, 2010;
  • Have a high school diploma or equivalent; a bachelor's degree in education is preferred;
  • Be able to read, write, and communicate effectively in English. If hired to be a bilingual assessor, must be fluent in both written and spoken English and Spanish;
  • Be willing to submit to a federally mandated background check;
  • Comply with all data security and confidentiality requirements;
  • Be able to lift and carry 20 lbs, (laptop computer and assessment materials), with or without accommodation, in and out of your home, vehicle, and schools;

Assessment Administrators (Job Code: WW/NP1/10001) We are seeking motivated individuals, who are committed to excellence and are experienced in working with primary and secondary school students. Westat will be conducting the 2011 National Assessment of Educational Progress, also known as NAEP or The Nation�s Report Card, for the National Center for Education Statistics, which is part of the U.S. Department of Education. The position involves conducting assessment sessions with 4th-, 8th-, and 12th-grade students in participating schools across the country. Each session lasts approximately 90 minutes, and involves about 30 students. You will work on a team but will conduct some sessions alone. This opportunity is ideal for retired educators.

Your duties will include:

  • Preparing assessment materials and assessment locations,
  • Checking student attendance,
  • Reading directions aloud to the students from a prepared script,
  • Monitoring the sessions,
  • Answering student questions using prepared guidelines,
  • Collecting completed assessment materials, and
  • Preparing completed materials for shipping.

Medical Records Abstractors

Medical Record Abstractors (Job Code: WW/DWN/99010) Westat is seeking individuals to gather and report data for a long-term national public health surveillance system that monitors trends in drug-related emergency department visits. Prior experience with medical records and/or medical terminology is required. Familiarity with computers including using multiple computer applications is necessary. We are looking for individuals who are dependable, detail-oriented, respectful of confidential information, and comfortable in a hospital environment. Reporters receive in-person training and support from Westat staff in the field as well as at the home office. Hours are negotiated with the hospital and may include either part-time or full-time work, evening and/or weekend shifts. This is a nonexempt position with limited benefits. Other Data Collectors

Data Collectors (WW/CMV/10020) We are currently seeking motivated individuals with a commitment to excellence to collect belt use data for an important transportation study conducted for The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. Data Collectors will travel to assigned intersections and highway segments and will use a PDA to collect data. Candidates must be available to work up to 10 hours per day everyday of the week for up to 1 week, depending on assignment, must be able to read maps, stand up to 90 minutes at a time, walk up to a mile, be outdoors in the heat, work with a partner, and have a valid driver's license and access to reliable, insured vehicle or access to a rental car. Qualifications include map reading and computer experience.

Mandatory training will be held August 5, 2010-August 6, 2010. Work will begin August 8, 2010. This is a part-time non-exempt position with limited benefits. Pay rates are based on base pay and experience.
