The benefits listed below are available to our salaried employees. Benefit eligibility varies for part-time, hourly, and temporary employees; eligibility is based on the type of position, the number of hours worked, and tenure.
Sharing our success with employees provides an important incentive for maintaining the quality of our services. Ownership by employees provides a stable organizational framework for long-term growth and development. Each year since 1977 Westat has allocated shares of stock to employee-participants. Annual stock contributions range between 3% and 5% of an employee's compensation.
Westat recognizes that our employees have lives outside of the workplace. We celebrate the balance between our employees' personal and professional lives and support initiatives that encourage employees to allocate time and energy for nonwork-related interests, including family responsibilities, hobbies, and health-related activities.
Westat also promotes activities that "bring life to work":
- Our annual company picnic includes Westat's families and friends
- We bring in programs such as Weight Watchers at Work, blood drives, CPR training, and retirement planning
- We offer employee discounts for many outside services, such as public transportation, banking, phone plans, computers and software, and hotels
Westat's The Right Track — healthy lifestyles, healthy living initiative is a comprehensive wellness program for Westat employees. With this program, employees learn how good health can promote better work attendance and performance. The program includes:
- Cafés with fresh and healthy breakfast, lunch, and snack choices
- Monthly wellness classes
- Various fitness challenges
- Flu shots
Membership at our Fitness Center, located at the Rockville campus, is offered to staff for a very small fee. The center has nearly 40 pieces of state-of-the-art strength and aerobic equipment, lockers and showers, towel service, and a dedicated group exercise room where a variety of exercise classes are provided.
Staff Bonus Plan
Teamwork and cooperation are integral to the success of our business and we reward that effort with a bonus program. Employees receive cash payment in December based on the overall success of the company.
401(k) Retirement Plan
The 401(k) is a defined contribution profit-sharing plan that is designed to provide tax-deferred, retirement-oriented benefits to participants. We contribute each year to all eligible accounts. Westat contributes a percentage of an employee's compensation each year along with a partial matching contribution. Several investment options are available through T. Rowe Price & Associates, and rollovers are accepted from qualified previous employer plans.
- Paid Leave. Westat provides employees with vacation time, sick leave, holiday time, and administrative leave for special situations such as jury duty, bereavement, and inclement weather.
- Unpaid Leave. Unpaid leave includes leave without pay, and Family Medical Leave Act (FMLA) leave.
Health, dental, life, travel accident, long-term disability, short term disability, and a flexible benefits program (Flex and Transit Benefits). Westat provides a wide variety of benefits reflecting the organization’s belief that its staff is its most important asset.
Employee Assistance Program
The Employee Assistance Program is available at no cost to Westat employees and their family members. This referral service provides help to manage issues in their personal and family lives. They can also seek guidance with financial and legal matters. EAP counselors provide assessment, support, and referrals to additional resources.
Professional Development Reimbursement
Professional development is important to us so that we stay on the cutting edge of the research industry. Employees can take advantage of educational programs (tuition and textbook reimbursement), professional conference attendance, professional association membership (dues and subscriptions), as well as in-house technical training.
