Westat Investigates the Barriers to Healthy Foods for SNAP Participants

Westat will identify the individual, household, and environmental barriers that prevent Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) participants to access a healthy diet.

Using a conceptual model of household purchasing and meal production, we will implement a study with a mixed-methods sequential explanatory design of two phases: a quantitative survey followed by in-depth interviews.

The findings will help identify the subgroups most affected by barriers and the effect of barriers on nutrition outcomes.

These statistical findings will be further informed by qualitative research to provide nuanced information about SNAP participants’ circumstances, perceptions, and coping strategies.
