Westat Staff Contribute to Research on Effectively Treating Depression in HIV-Infected Youth

Westat’s James Bethel, Ph.D., Jiahong Xu, and Sarah Thornton are contributing authors to a recent article, Effective Treatment of Depressive Disorders in Medical Clinics for Adolescents and Young Adults Living With HIV: A Controlled Trial, in the Journal of Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndromes (JAIDS) involving treating depression of young adults with HIV, a demographic particularly at risk for depression.

The study compared combining cognitive behavioral therapy and medication management tailored for youth living with HIV to usual treatment. The researchers found that measurement-guided psychotherapy and medication management tailored for these youth was more effective in achieving and sustaining remission from depression than the usual course of treatment.
