Newsweek's 2016 high school rankings
Families have few sources of information on the quality of their local public high schools, other than the rankings produced by news outlets such as U.S. News & World Report and Newsweek.
Those rankings have serious shortcomings, however. Intended to be a measure of school quality, they have mostly reflected the relative wealth of the schools’ students.
Westat developed a method for ranking high schools that controlled for family wealth as a way to recognize schools that serve lower income children.
