Finding the road to health in Tennessee

The Challenge

How do your travel habits affect your health? What impact does transportation have on your community? City planners in Tennessee are beginning to pay more attention to these questions, including how a city’s transportation network affects air quality, physical activity, and driver safety.

To better understand how travel choices affect residents, the Tennessee Department of Transportation hired Westat to conduct the Middle Tennessee Transportation and Health Study.

Our Solutions

  • We interviewed the residents of 6,000 households about their travel habits.
  • We collected additional information on physical activity from a subset of 600 households.
  • We provided the study participants with an accelerometer to measure their physical activity over 4 days and a GPS device to track their travel.
  • The study is the primary source of information that local transportation planners can use to
    • Identify impediments to safe and efficient travel within their communities
    • Improve transportation to ensure better access to jobs and housing, reduce traffic congestion, and increase mobility

The Results

  • The study is the primary source of information that local transportation planners use to
    • Identify deficiencies in the transportation system
