DAWN Releases Report on Non-Fatal Overdoses

The Drug Abuse Warning Network (DAWN) released a report on national estimates of emergency department (ED) visits for non-fatal overdoses. The report highlights visit characteristics and drugs involved.

Key data findings include:

  • Annually, an estimated 180 per 100,000 people were treated for a non-fatal overdose in the ED.
  • Patients aged 26 to 44 years accounted for the highest rate of non-fatal overdose ED visits.
  • 39.7% of non-fatal overdose ED visits involved polysubstance, defined as more than 1 substance.
  • Opioids were the most common substance involved in non-fatal overdose ED visits.
