While multimode surveying is the most advantageous way to conduct large- and small-scale studies and ease respondent burden, it opens the door to key challenges. Top of those challenges is how to efficiently collect and process customized data across multiple platforms and then how to integrate the data with other systems.
With the use of Blaise® 5, these and other challenges are easily met. This latest version of the Blaise® computer-assisted interviewing (CAI) system and processing tool
- Significantly improves customization capabilities
- Offers better support for mixed-mode surveys
- Provides a more integrated approach to survey layout
- Delivers a greatly enhanced development environment
Blaise and Westat
As the sole distributor of Blaise software in North America and South America, Westat

- Offers trainings for users
- Provides technical support
- Features
Blaise is powerful, efficient, flexible, and rich with features. Features allow for customized data collection instruments that can be applied to various computer platforms and phones, including Windows, iOS, and Android. It also allows integration of Blaise with non-Blaise systems and software. Its modular and reusable language structure permits many surveys to use the same blocks of code with little or no modification.
Development Environment
Blaise 5’s new development environment offers an advanced text editor (with features such as syntax highlighting, IntelliSense, and bracketing) and a WYSIWYG environment for specifying survey layout. Blaise takes full advantage of industry standards, such as XML, Unicode, ADO.NET, MVC, and WPF (Windows Presentation Foundation).
Compatibility
Blaise 5 maintains as much compatibility as possible with source code and binary files from earlier versions of Blaise. Blaise 5 multimode, multiplatform, multilingual, multidevice integration combines computer-assisted telephone interviewing (CATI), computer-assisted personal interviewing (CAPI), and computer-assisted web interviewing (CAWI) into a single instrument for data collection. This integration maximizes the economic and methodological potential of each mode.
