Exploring Family Caregiver Burden: Westat Staff Publish on Survey Findings

To assess the impact of caregiver support services on multiple caregiver outcomes, Westat conducted a longitudinal evaluation of the National Family Caregiver Support Program (NFCSP) for the Administration for Community Living. NFCSP provides respite care and educational services to nonpaid caregivers caring for older adults at home.
Westat found that caregivers receiving 4 or more hours of NFCSP respite care had a slight decline in self-reported caregiver burden over time, while caregivers not receiving NFCSP respite care experienced a slight increase in self-reported burden. Furthermore, Westat researchers identified several key factors that predict caregivers’ experience of unmet need (not receiving all help needed).
