Helping Denied Disability Applicants Find Work

August 24, 2021

Each year, 2 million+ people apply for Social Security disability benefits. For the Supported Employment Demonstration (SED), Westat recruited applicants with a mental impairment who were denied disability benefits. The enrollment rate substantially exceeded that of previous demonstrations of similar populations.

A new article, Enrollment in the Supported Employment Demonstration: An Employment Intervention for Denied Disability Benefits Applicants with a Mental Impairment in Administration and Policy in Mental Health and Mental Health Services Research, analyzes the results of the SED enrollment. The article was coauthored by Westat researchers Jeffrey Taylor, Ph.D., William Frey, Ph.D., Jarnee Riley, M.S., and Jocelyn Marrow, Ph.D., along with David Salkever, Ph.D., of the University of Maryland Baltimore County.

The enrollment analysis will inform future studies by identifying the types of people who decide to enroll and their reasons for enrolling or not enrolling.
