Volunteer vs Random Sampling for COVID-19 Estimates

June 13, 2023

Does random sampling produce better results than volunteer community-wide sampling for COVID-19 estimates? And does either method provide better estimates than administratively reported data? A recent study on this topic appears in Am J Public Health, “Stratified Simple Random Sampling Versus Volunteer Community-Wide Sampling for Estimates of COVID-19 Prevalence.” Westat’s J. Michael Brick, PhD, was among the co-authors of this study.

The focus of their research included analyzing random and volunteer adult samples over 8 COVID-19 waves from June 2020 through August 2021 and comparing these results with administratively reported rates of COVID-19.
