What Pneumonia Vaccine Prompts the Best Immunity Response in Infants Whose Mothers Have HIV?

New research compares immune responses of 2 pneumonia vaccines, PCV-10 and PPV-23, and found that PPV-23 provided during pregnancy to be more beneficial to the infants. The findings appear in Effect of Maternal Vaccination of PCV-10, PPV-23 or Placebo on the Immunogenicity of PCV-10 in HIV-Exposed Uninfected Infants: A Randomized Clinical Trial, which appears in Clinical Infectious Diseases. Westat staff members Lauren Laimon, M.S., and Lassallete Newton are among the coauthors of the article. 

“This research is of the utmost importance,” notes Ms. Laimon. “It paves the way toward using the best treatments available for HIV-infected pregnant mothers and infants.”
