Overview

Gizem Korkmaz, PhD, is an Associate Vice President. She integrates her background in economics with data science by blending it with novel methods such as machine learning, natural language processing, and social network analysis. Korkmaz specializes in the use novel data sources, including unstructured text-based data scraped from the web such as social media data to conduct social, behavioral, and policy research. She contributed extensively to network science, game theory, social network analysis, text analytics, and behavioral economics. She has worked on a broad range of topics, including collective action, social contagion, innovation economics, science of science, social media analytics, and policy analytics.

Previously, Korkmaz was a Research Associate Professor at the University of Virginia, and also worked as a Senior Research Scientist at Coleridge Initiative. In both these roles, Korkmaz spearheaded several research projects supported by government agencies, including the NSF, DoD from the federal side, and also state and local government agencies. Korkmaz is passionate about the development of a workforce using data science to contribute to community-based research. She was the co-director of UVA’s Data Science for the Public Good Young Scholars Program and led the of launch a Young Scholars program in Turkey. Korkmaz was selected as the 2016 Outstanding New Faculty by Virginia Tech Northern Capital Region Faculty Association.
