Employment Fraud

When applying for any job, be alert to recruitment scams. Some examples of recruitment scams include the following activities:

• Asking you to provide personal information (e.g., Social Security number) or payment-related information (e.g., banking information) during the application for employment process.
• Asking you to purchase gift cards or cash checks and send the money to “vendors”. (Note: If you receive a check to cash, do not cash it. Inform the bank the check was written from immediately. If you are able to cash the check, you may be held financially responsible by your personal bank for the missing funds.)
• Asking you to participate in an “interview” by chat or email.

Westat recommends that you mark suspicious messages as spam in your email to stop any further communications from potential recruitment scams, and encourages you to fill out a report on the FBI Cyber Crime website with any details that you can provide about these scammers. The website is the FBI Internet Crime Complaint Center (IC3). You should also consider contacting your state’s attorney general’s office to report the scam and reporting the scam to the business or recruiting website or social media platform that may have been involved.
