HIV Prevention Campaign Wins Berreth Award

December 9, 2019

Doing It My Way (YouTube video), a micro-campaign developed by Westat for the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), won a Berreth Award from the National Public Health Information Coalition (NPHIC). The Berreth Award honors excellence and reflects the best of public health communication initiatives.

The stigma around HIV often leads to people not talking about or testing for HIV. #DoingItMyWay created opportunities to curate stories about the ways people make HIV testing part of their lives, share stories that encourage more people to get tested, normalize the concept of testing, and remove the stigma.

Westat created a platform for encouraging HIV champions, partners, and general audiences to participate and share their perspectives via social media, community engagement events, and partner activations. The concept resonated so well that #DoingItMyWay was selected as the official theme for National HIV Testing Day 2018 and again in 2019. Westat team members TaWanna Berry, Anna Taylor, Julie Yegen, Monique Thornton, Glynis Jones, and Tom Fields led this successful effort.

NPHIC is committed to “making public health public” by sharing knowledge, expertise, and resources to effectively communicate about the important health issues of the day. NPHIC’s mission is to help people lead healthier lives in healthier communities.
