May 5, 2025

Gizem Korkmaz, PhD, Westat Vice President, Data Science and AI, will present at the 10th Biennial Atlanta Conference on Science and Innovation Policy, hosted by Georgia Tech, May 14-16, 2025. This leading conference brings together scholars, policymakers, and AI experts to share top-tier empirical research focusing on science and innovation.

“This is an exciting area at the intersection of data science and science policy,” noted Liz Mannshardt, PhD, Westat Vice President and Director, Statistics and Data Science. “The expert panelists, including Gizem, bring valuable insights to share from their groundbreaking work measuring the value and impact of open-source software innovations.”

Korkmaz specializes in the use of novel data sources, particularly administrative records and unstructured text-based data, to conduct policy research. She is presenting methodologies and data on open-source software contributions across sectors and countries, and discussing her paper, “From GitHub to GDP: A Framework for Measuring Open-Source Software Innovation,” as part of the panel she organized, “From Metrics to Policy: The Role of Open-Source Software in Science and Innovation.” This panel will showcase global collaboration patterns and the transformative potential of open-source software to inform science and innovation policy, offering novel approaches for measurement, attribution, and economic valuation in an increasingly AI-driven economy.
