Toolkit Supports High-Quality Preschool Special Education Data

March 16, 2022

The Preschool Environments Toolkit, developed by Westat for the IDEA Data Center (IDC), helps inform state and local education agencies (SEAs and LEAs) on the process of collecting and reporting data about where preschoolers with disabilities are receiving services. This information, which must be reported each year to the U.S. Department of Education, Office of Special Education Programs, helps inform overall program improvement.

The toolkit includes

  • Information and resources related to federal data reporting requirements
  • Interactive decision tree
  • Preschool Environments Calculator and Data Analysis Tool (allows SEAs to enter and analyze child-level data from the state’s data system)

“By examining preschool environments data using IDC’s Preschool Environments Toolkit, program leaders can improve inclusive programming for preschoolers with disabilities,” notes Vera Stroup-Rentier, Ph.D., a Westat Senior Study Director.
