What Is the Cost-Effectiveness of Gamifying Algebra?

October 25, 2023

Matthew Finster

According to new research published in the Journal of Research on Educational Effectiveness, “Cost-Effectiveness of Algebraic Technological Applications,” From Here to There (FH2T) and DragonBox are low-cost interventions for improving students’ algebraic performance and addressing the nation’s decline in mathematics. The paper was led and coauthored by Westat’s Matthew Finster, PhD, and Lauren Decker-Woodrow, PhD.

This work builds on previous work by Decker-Woodrow and colleagues that examined the impact of educational game-based technology tools to support learning, including FH2T and DragonBox 12+ (DragonBox).

“We are excited to present the cost-effectiveness study in tandem with the impact paper to demonstrate cost-effective ways to engage students in algebraic,” says Finster, the lead author of the study.
