What ways can countries create sustainable, national HIV surveillance systems?

Improving the surveillance of HIV in Senegal

To better prevent and control the spread of HIV, the West African country of Senegal is working to establish a high-quality, country-wide HIV surveillance system.

Like other countries in the region, it is looking for ways to

  • Provide ongoing collection and analysis of data on the prevalence of HIV
  • Make HIV surveillance activities more cost-effective and sustainable
  • Maintain the quality of its surveillance methods and data
  • Ensure that its surveillance methods are culturally sensitive and appropriate for Senegal

Westat is supporting the work of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and Senegal’s Ministry of Health, Cheikh Anta Diop University, and the National AIDS Control Program.

  • Senegal’s Ministry of Health offers HIV testing through prenatal clinics as part of its program to prevent the transmission of HIV from mothers to infants. We will use the clinics’ data to determine the rates of HIV infection among pregnant women in Senegal.
  • We will develop and expand an electronic case reporting system that allows health care providers to report all new cases of HIV infection diagnosed in their facilities directly to the Ministry of Health. At least 80% of health care facilities with diagnostic capabilities will be linked to the system.
  • A sustainable, national HIV surveillance system will generate high-quality epidemiological data that will help guide Senegal’s HIV prevention and control efforts.
