How can we reduce hypertension among high-risk groups?

Supporting the Hypertension Disparities Reduction Program to improve health outcomes among diverse populations

Challenge

Although blood pressure control has been improving in the general population, research has not fully addressed patients in subgroups more burdened by health problems associated with uncontrolled hypertension.

Achieving control of hypertension is challenging for both clinicians and patients, particularly given the social determinants of health that may influence outcomes among high-risk populations.

The Hypertension Disparities Reduction Program is a research partnership between the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute (NHLBI) and the Patient-Centered Outcomes Research Institute (PCORI) to study efforts to reduce health disparities in these outcomes among African Americans, Hispanic/Latino Americans, and low-income and rural individuals.

Solution

Two community-based studies are testing implementation strategies to help more vulnerable populations manage their condition and improve hypertension control.

Each study is comparing blood pressure control interventions designed and implemented with input from patients and other stakeholders.

Westat supports the partnership activities as the research coordinating unit. Key responsibilities include hosting the steering committee and Data and Safety Monitoring Board (DSMB) meetings for NHLBI and PCORI.

Results

This cooperative agreement will further the understanding of practice- and community-based interventions to address health disparities and the intersections of race/ethnicity, income, and rural populations.
